“I’ve only been exercising for 5 minutes, and I’m already knackered! I’m SO unfit!”

This is aimed towards people who are new to exercise.  Who have plucked up the courage to get stuck in, but don’t know what to expect.

But having said that, it applys to absolutely everyone!  It doesn’t matter if you are brand new, or if you have been training for a while now, or even if you are competing on the international stage.  It is the same for everyone.

So I guess what I’m saying is, if you are new to exercise, don’t worry about this…just join the club!

So have you ever started your training session and within the first 5 or 10 minutes found yourself huffing and puffing so hard you thought you were about to burst a lung?  I reckon about 99% of people will answer that with a yes!

If this is your first experience of exercise, there is a bloody good chance your next thoughts will be something along the lines of:

“Bloody hell I’m so unfit!  Bugger this for a laugh, exercise is not for me!  I’m not doing this again!”

And all too often, that is it!  They have tried it, it felt crap, so they don’t try it again until the new year, when the same thing happens and their theory they can’t do exercise is confirmed.

But because I’m a firm believer that people should do rediculous things fully informed (but still do them anyway), here is my little diagram illustrating how every training session is for everyone (doesn’t matter if they are beginners or advance…it’s the same for everyone).

We are all going to be a bit shite at the start of any training session.  This is before the body has warmed up and got ready.  You can think of it as still being in “low power” mode.  The muscles, lungs, heart, nerves, everything is still dialled right down low.  It takes a while for all these systems to wind up to speed.  And until then, we are going to be a bit crap.

We will get out of breath quicker, we wont be as mobile, we wont be as strong, we will be more clumsy…we will be a bit crap.  

And unfortunately, this is all many beginners experience.  They stop at this point.  They don’t go any further.  So all they know is:

“Exercise = feeling crap”

And they see other people voluntarily exercising…and enjoying it?!?!?!  They think we are a bunch of masochistic freaks!  But the thing we know (conciously or subconciously) is that after that initial 5-10 minutes of being rubbish, comes our second wind.  When things start to flow.  Things get easier, they just start to “work”  And that is a really good feeling, trust me!

So whether you are a beginner just starting out, or advanced trying to nail a new move/technique, let the above illustration sink in…accept it/we will be a bit rubbish at first.  But stick with it and stay on the path for a few minutes and let your second wind kick in.
